The issues I had with Ace were still bubbling under the surface as he drove us to his estate. The downpour of rain that started when we left the city did little to help dissuade my mood and also made the trip take longer.

Conversation that would usually make the journey go quicker failed us. The soft jazz music was supposed to be a buffer for our silence but served as a quiet countdown to the inevitable. It was a blessing and a curse because it gave me plenty of time to sit here with my thoughts and for my anxiety levels to increase. It was because we were going back to his home, the place that had become my prison. While the dynamics felt different, I was still going back to when I felt captive for a time with him.

Ace parked his car in front of his home, and he turned his head toward me. Before he could say anything, though, I hopped out of the car and into the pouring rain.

With the rain pelting down on me once I exited the car, it didn’t take long for me to get soaked almost to the bone. I couldn’t force myself to move when I knew I should. A decision needed to be made and quick.

I stood outside of his home as the rain pelted my body. The logical solution would be to walk up to the door and knock, but I couldn’t. I was back where I started and felt horrible, but once again, I was left with no other choice. Now whether he would protect me was another matter entirely, but I had only two options in this scenario: get back into Ace’s good graces or die. If I ran, I’d be looking over my shoulder for the rest of my life, and it would only be a matter of time before Falcone found me.

I swiped at my hair that lay across my face and it wasn’t until Ace came around and tossed a jacket over my head that I ran with him toward the front door.

The door opened and Marnie walked out, attempting to open her umbrella to guard herself from the rain. It took a second before she noticed us. When she did, her mouth dropped open.

“Get inside! Quickly, both of you!”

We rushed past Marnie and into the foyer, water dripping from our bodies. Marnie quickly ran into a bathroom on the main level and handed both Ace and me a towel to dry off.

“I’ll go get Anderson to help here.”

“No,” Ace said, stopping Marnie before she could turn away. “Let Anderson enjoy his night off. The storm is bad, so if you want to stay the evening, that’s fine too. Harlow and I can manage on our own.”

Ace’s phone rang. When he answered it, I saw his expression change from passive to angry. Instead of waiting for his next move, I turned to Marnie.

“Do you know if the guest room I was staying in still has the clothes Ace bought for me?”

“As far as I know, it does.
